AT&T App Enables International Calls

AT&T is offering a new app that allows smartphone users to make reasonably priced international calls via VoIP, MSNBC reports.

Created with help from 8x8, the app, called AT&T Call International, will allow customers to place international long-distance calls over WiFi for much less than they would have to pay under standard roming plans, Engadget.com reports. Calls start at as little as $0.02 a minute to Canada and $.04 a minute to China, France, Germany and the UK when dialing a landline.

The new app, which uses a customer's existing wireless service, also works while abroad when connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot.

"The app provides simple, step-by-step instructions to establish an AT&T Call International account," AT&T said in a press release. "Once established, customers can immediately make international calls through the app by either dialing directly or by accessing their existing contacts list. All calls are billed directly to the customer's credit card."

AT&T Call International is available for all versions of the iPhone, including certain Android and Blackberry handsets, MSNBC reports. It can be downloaded for free through the Apple App store and the AT&T website.
